What You Should Know About On-Site Brake Maintenance For Your Fleet

The computer kicks in, gauging both the road condition and the amount of pressure you are applying to the brakes to intermittently apply that pressure, thus leaving the wheels moving and giving you a measure of control and steerability. This is a quantum leap from the old days, when your wheels would lock up fairly easily and you were at the mercy of inertia. This works to an even greater extent in an accident. Your car’s computer reads that increase in pressure as an emergency situation, and allows more pressure, while increasing the frequency of it’s own pressing and releasing. Where this becomes dangerous, and dangerous in the extreme, is when your rotors are warped. Warping is a regular occurrence, and it can be avoided, but we are talking about rotors that are already warped. When your brake pads come into contact with warped rotors, your computer reads that as you driving on a road where you are losing traction, and goes into Anti Lock mode, pressing and releasing. What makes this so dangerous is that when it releases and goes to press again, it is sometimes pressing on a part of the rotor that doesn’t have good contact because of the warping. For this reason, a large part of the effective speed reduction usually achieved is lost. I can tell you from frightening experience that you do not want to go through that. There are few feelings worse than riding up on a car that has, for unseen reasons, stopped in the middle of the highway when there is nothing you can do to stop. You have to just watch yourself skid up and smash into the other car.

What is the best way to avoid this? Frequently checking your rotors is step one.
