How to Choose the Best Archery Arrows

While you may have carefully chosen the right recurve or compound bow most suitable for your needs but have you thought about the type of arrows you will use with it? Choosing the right arrow is crucial if you are to be successful and has to be a good match for your bow and be fitting for how you will be using it. Will you be using your bow mostly for hunting deer or other animals or for target shooting? What options in arrow construction are there and which type is suitable for your needs?

Wooden Arrows

Wood has always been the material used for arrows but today wood arrows are used only for beginners and for longbow competitions. They are not popular for other uses since they don’t give uniform results due to variation in the shape and weight of the arrows. These types of arrows can break easily and can warp however they are low-priced and may be good to practise with if you are a beginner.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are more consistent than wooden arrows as they are much more uniform but they are brittle and easily broken. They are can be fitted easily to a range of draw lengths and are often used for hunting.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows manufactured from aluminum are a great deal tougher than those made from wood or fibreglass. They are uniformly manufactured so are consistent and reliable. They are made in a broad array of types and sizes so there is sure to be one correct for your style and bow. These types of arrows are uniform and durable which makes them ideal for competitions and hunting and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. They are more expensive than fiberglass arrows so may be unsuitable for novices who tend to lose a lot of arrows. In this case you should choose a cheaper arrow until you’ve had more practise!

Carbon Composite Arrows

Serious archers tend to use these types of arrows because they are consistent, durable and high speed. They are made with a core of aluminium with an outer coating of carbon composite material and are very strong so won’t easily break as fiberglass arrows can do. They are certainly the best arrows you can buy but they are costly so are generally used only by serious archers.

Other Things to Think About

Fletches now are usually manufactured from synthetic materials although you can still find traditional feather fletches. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches during its flight and helps to improve speed. Have a go with different types to establish what feels the best for you. The point is also important. A different point is needed for hunting than for target practise. Finally, buy a good quiver to protect your arrows and carry spare draw strings with you.
