The   crappies can adapt and live in just about any type of lake and they go by names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth in many parts of the country is a very adaptable fish species. Right after the pole crappie are done spawning they may be inactive for about 2 weeks regaining their strength from the strenuous spawn. They will still hit crappie baits while bait fishing but they will not chase artificial crappie baits during this time. During this period a good crappie live bait selection such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish might be a better crappie bait to use. You can fish these crappie live baits with a fixed or slip bobber crappie fishing rig. You may want to choose the slip bobber rig because it is easier to adjust your depth until you find the white perch’s right depth and start catching crappie.

In shallow lakes these are primary areas that speckled perch will head too. Many times in shallow lakes using crappie jigs with a plastic grub and tipped with a wax worm will catch crappie.

In deeper lakes and reservoirs pole crappie will head for deep weed lines or a near drop off into deep water. It’s very common to find the suspended at about 5 to 15 feet deep. Many crappie anglers will drift fish or troll over these locations with multiple crappie fishing rigs that have crappie jigs with soft plastic grubs or curly tails set at different depths. Sometimes setting up a crappie pole or two, set up with a live crappie bait such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish works well too.

Once you start catching crappie consistently at a certain depth and crappie bait, change your other crappie poles to the same bait and re-fish the area until you stop catching crappie.

Soft plastics ar by far the most popular largemouth bass baits used by bass fisherman nationwide. Soft plastic large mouth bass lures are as close to natural bass baits that you can get. They look and feel like real largemouth bass food when bass hit your bait.

They can be rigged so the hook is imbedded in the plastic so you can fish dense cover, common when you are using Texas bass fishing rigs, or with what is know as a Carolina bass fishing rig, where the hook or hooks are exposed. Carolina large mouth bass fishing rigs are normally fished on a clean bottom, and used in thick cover because of the exposed hooks. The Carolina rig is very enticing to large mouth bass because of how the fishing rig is designed. A slip sinker is attached well up your fishing line and when lowered through the water the soft plastic fishing lure seems to almost float and flutter because it is dropping through the water much slower then the slip sinker which attracts the large month bass.

Another popular way to fish soft plastics is by using a small jig head. This methods of fishing for bass is intended for a very slow largemouth bass bait fishing presentation. Fishing with soft plastic fishing lures and a jig head works great for known largemouth bass habitat locations but is not a good fishing method if you intended to fish news bass fishing waters. Soft plastic bass baits work well in cold water so spring and early summer are the best time of the year to use them. We are going to describe in the last three paragraphs how to make a Texas large mouth bass fishing rig, and a simple Carolina largemouth bass fishing rig.

To make a Texas bass fishing rig you will need the following fishing tackle. Start by pushing the thin tip end of a bullet sinker up your line first, then tie on a offset nightcrawler hook. Next push your soft plastic bass fishing bait on to your offset starting about 3/8” inch from the fat end of the soft plastic bait, and bring the hook out the side. Then twist the hook 180 degrees and push the hook back into the soft plastic bass bait deep enough to almost penetrate the other side but not pushing through.

To make a simple Carolina bass fish rig that has a strait hook you will need to start with the following fishing tackle. You will need a strait bass fishing hook, brass sinker, two way swivel, and a shinny bead. The brass sinker and the glass bead are used to create a “clinking” noise when falling through the water. This noise attracts the largemouth bass. Slide the brass sinker up the line with the pointed end going on first. Next slide the bead up the line., then tie the two way swivel on the line . Next tie on a 12” leader that already has a bass fishing hook attached on one end to the open eye of the two way swivel. Then push a soft plastic bass bait such as what is called afrench fry about 3/8” from the top of the fat end of the soft plastic bass bait.

Learn How To Fish Downriggers

Expeienced anglers know that downrigging the most accurate way to assure the bait is at the right depth-short of dropping anchor of coarse.  Ideally, of course, you want to be able to keep your lure in the depth range where you want it-at the depth where your fish finder is indicating the fish are located-at any given point in time.  It will take a little trial and error, patience, and a bit of record keeping, but you can become adept at doing this.

I like to use the the best.I have used other brands but was never satisfied with thier performance or durability.  They generally fell apart too soon or rusted long before they should have, and I didn’t feel I got a real value for my money.

However, some really great downrigging system are made by Cannon.  They have more complex systems, but I like to work with something a little simpler, like the Mag 10TS, for example.  Experienced boaters and fishermen trust the Magnum because it has been proven to be extremely durable and dependable.  It offers a speedy retrieval rate of 250 feet per minute, includes a short-stop feature to protect their boat so that a swinging weight won’t put a hole in the side, and it is really tough and can handle a lot.The Mag 10ST has a stainless stell spool constructed to withstand the rigors of the new super lines now popular.  It looks stylish with an attractive metallic white finish, and it features Positive Ion Control designed to make your boat a fish-finding magnet by creating an electrical field fish are drawn into.

To start, you need to determine how deep you want to be and how fast you plan to troll. When trolling faster or going deeper, more weight will be needed.  This is because you must compensate for the drag of the water that increases with your trolling speed.  As an example, many Great Lakes fishermen who are trying to catch salmon troll at 1.5 up to 3 miles per hour and aim for a depth of 15 to 30 feet down, so they don’t have a significant drag and can use a 5lb ball. But deep sea fishermen trying to catch grouper-which often are at 60 feet deep or even deeper-troll at around 5 knots. There is a lot moe drag with deep water and higher speeds.  So they probably need to use a 20lb weight.

Once you have an idea of the size of weight you want to use, you’ll still need to experiment a bit to be sure you’re on track.  Head out on the water to a depth similar to the depth at which you plan to fish.  Adjust your boat speed to troll at the rate you plan to use based on the kind of fish you plan to catch.  Now drop the ball all the way to the bottom at which point you will you see the cable start to slack up.  Then quickly stop it and retrieve a bit of cable to tighten it back up.  Now take a look at the depth gauge on your downrigger.  Here’s where the record keeping comes in.Record that depth, your speed, ball weight and the depth of the water.

Now try experimenting a bit. Each time you adjust your speed make a note of the information aquired.  Adjust the cable depth at the various speeds and take note of that.  Essentially you want to determine how much cable is ideal to let out at each particular depth and speed for the fish you are trying to catch.  Using a percentage of the total length of cable required to reach the bottom-or some simple subtraction-you should then be able to calculate how much cable to let out if you want to run at 20 feet from the bottom-or 10 feet or 5 feet above or wherever you want to be.

Personally, I like to stay right around 10 feet above the bottom.  For starters, I know bottom fish will still take the right bait from that distance. They will swim up for it.  But also, I don’t like the idea of getting hooked on something lying on the bottom and having to cut my cable.

I also recommend keeping the lead line at ten feet or less-from the ball to the lure or bait you’re using-so you can get the advantage of the negative Ion field that surrounds the ball itself.  You need to be this close to utilize that. When there is too long a lenght of leader in between it will not work.

Beside the Cannon Mag 10TS there are some other basic needs to get started.Using a good sturdy 7′ rod with a conventioal reel attached and the proper strenght line for the fish you are targeting, a well made line release attached to your ball, the right bait and a decent boat, you’llsoon be downrigging like a pro.Downrigger fishing is a fun and enjoyable method of fihing and one that easy to master.

You can get more information about all of the Cannon downriggers plus accessories-and all kinds of other fishing and boating electroncs-at the eFishBox.com website.

To move past the basics of fishing for channel catfish, and blue catfish you need to understand good catfish structure, and realize what edge effects are and what they do. You can be an expert at creating catfish baits but if you can’t find the channel catfish with any consistency you are just going to be hit and miss on whether you have a good catch of channel catfish. Understanding channel catfish, and blue catfish location is a key component of moving past the basics of fishing for catfish.

The definition of what is know as the “edge effect” is as follows: “The increased concentration of animals that sometimes appear when to habitats meet” Lets take this definition and relate it to fishing for channel catfish and blue catfish. Edges are very important to catfish fishing because both channel catfish, blue catfish will concentrate at certain edge lines within known catfish structure areas. If you can learn to read edge line you can save yourself a lot of time when you are on the water. Lets take for example you locate you are out fishing on a large reservoir and you locate a large school of gizzard shad but when you cast into the school you get nothing. Then you decide to move farther back from the school and just fish the edges. Wham! You get a hit and catch a 15lb blue catfish! Guess what you just used the edge effect!

The face of fishing structure for channel catfish , and blue catfish and flathead catfish has changed considerably in recent years. The this day and age you need more then just identifying where catfish structure is located. You need to understand where within that structure will the catfish be holding, and feeding. You still have to identify physical bottom changes, bottom debris locations and humps and depth changes but you also need to understand seasonal migrations and where and when channel catfish and blue catfish will be holding there. If you can get a good grasp of this concept you will be well on your way to being a very successful catfish angler.
