What You Might Not Know About Street Hockey

Being bias and cheating, although almost impossible to completely avoid, should be left out from the games as much as possible. The beauty of street hockey lies in it’s simplicity, and all the benefits that come with it.  Typically, games are usually informal with no referee and no set teams.  In most inline hockey leagues, fighting is not part of the game, as it is against the rules.  If you have yet to try out this great sport, what are you waiting for?  If players do choose to have one of their own act as or play the part of the referee, make sure they do not referee games that can affect the standing of their team.  You won’t regret it.

For me personally, I got involved in the game after watching so many of my friends play it themselves.  In addition, if you have any interest in playing ice hockey in particular, look at street hockey as being only one small step away from taking your hockey game to the next level by going to your local rink.  If your at all interested in playing the actual game, and you’re looking forward to getting started, it’s as easy as finding a few friends in your neighbourhood, getting some equipment, especially street hockey equipment (particularly working with a good quality plastic hockey net that can be easily attached to any garage door), and start playing. What’s also great about the sport, and that usually seems to be forgotten, is that it’s a cheap alternative to it’s massively expensive version played on ice, also known as Ice Hockey.

Now, I’m hooked.  Going against this rule can potentially kick off the offending player, with a possible suspension from future games as well.  Grab some friends, hit the streets, and play ball!

Equipment Guide For Goalies

For that reason, goalies require equipment that can offer sufficient protection to fend off the blows from pucks and players alike.  Online, hockey players can find retailers by doing searches online from home and without having to take the time to travel to and search their local stores.  Many players get recommendations from their friends who have purchased favorable, protective merchandise.  Because the merchandise offered is available for any player, there is something for every level of skill.  The makers of the equipment make items to ensure the safety of goalies and allow for freedom of movement.  By offering items made from durable materials that can withstand great abuse, equipment retailers can provide means for protection and optimal play. Several retailers now allow players to purchase merchandise online.

Online retailers can offer a wide selection of merchandise for players of all skill levels as the retailers may have access to stock that can be stored in different locations.  Knowing where to get the right equipment for each player’s specific needs is essential for safety and enhancing each player’s game. The bodies of hockey players withstand a great deal of abuse and no one deals with more than the goalie.

Why You Need Gloves For Hockey

These grip designs allow the player to grip the stick during the game.  Basic gloves have padding on the outsides of the hands in order to fully protect the hands from hard hits. Other aspects of the designs include variations on different grip designs used on the palms.  Because they are a functional part of the player’s uniform, they have to be made to withstand the rigors of their function. Now more than ever, you can easily find an abundance of gloves by looking online.  The gloves worn by goalies differ from what are worn by players on the ice.  Hockey players from every skill level need the same basic equipment for protection and they need equipment that can help improve rather than impede their play.  Though they are padded, they are lighter for ease of use.

The gloves themselves are made of a combination of materials including leather, fabric, and vinyl. Each manufacturer of hockey gloves has unique designs to meet the needs of the players using them.  One online retailer offers a wide spectrum of designs.  They are made of materials that can withstand the abuse incurred during strenuous play.

They are made for the purpose of each player on the team.  Goalies also use them to catch or block pucks that come to the net.  Each of the goalies that work to defend the net from flying pucks wears gloves that offer protection.

Detailed Hockey Training Plan

One thing I must stress is that training shouldn’t be looked at as something negative.  Get out there and train. The sport of Hockey is no different.  The Step-Up in particular is an excellent exercise as it targets the quad, glut-hamstring muscle groups that are key for speed development.  There are many articles you can find on the Internet that go in-depth about each aspect and more for your sport of choice, including hockey. Regardless of what anyone tells you, training for your sport of choice is a necessity.  Don’t leave this part out. If you want the power to move quickly and the stamina for sustained hard skating, you must condition the muscles and cardiovascular system to build strength, power, and endurance.

When using weights in a strength conditioning program, it is recommended to start off with light weights, build some initial strength, and then work your way up.  Training for any sport is a necessity.  It doesn’t matter what the sport is, training will help improve not only your skills, but of course, your overall game performance.

So, what are you waiting for?  That’s so important.  While flexibility is an important aspect to your training routine, strength and power are equally important as the key for speed development.

For most athletes, it is an essential component in their training program(s), and therefore should not be neglected.  This is something that shouldn’t be overlooked.  Something that “has” to be done, but you don’t really feel like doing.

Increasing the strength of one’s upper body will allow players to shoot with more power and pass over a greater range of distances.  In reverse, it should be looked at as something that’s positive, knowing that the effort you put in will be well worth it and most definitely pay off. Make the “training routine” that you create for yourself a fun one.  For some, flexibility consists of nothing more than some half hearted stretches following their endurance, speed or strength session(s), giving little importance to this crucial aspect.

If you look at the best players in the world, you would be out of luck trying to find any of the “greats” that didn’t incorporate some form of training into their routine.  Whether that’s baseball, basketball, or even hockey.  To put it simply, training is important.

In whatever you do, and it’s not just limited to sports, you should look for the “fun in it.” Get friends to join you and have them actually partake in the actual exercises or have them act as your coach, lending you some motivation.  Stick handling can also greatly improve your speed, in addition to timing, eye and stick coordination, precision, puck control, touch, feel and consistency when handling a puck or stick handling ball. Strength conditioning has increasingly become a central factor to one’s hockey training routine.  Most importantly though, sports demand that you work your whole body, and thus you should incorporate a whole-body workout, especially for improving core strength. In all, the “practice routines” mentioned above are only a few ideas that can be applied to help improve your game of hockey.

Even if your naturally good at any sport in particular, working on those acquired skills will make you even better.  Strengthening the abs in particular, which can be done using a medicine ball in addition to other methods, can greatly improve strength and explosiveness.  It’s a must.

It helps you improve, and the benefits can be tremendous. Flexibility may be one of the most overlooked aspects of physical preparation.  Incorporating exercises in your routine that help improve both core strength and postural stability are critical.

How the Stanley Cup Came Into Existence

We all know about the Stanley Cup now… the highest honor and award that hockey teams are after.  But you may not know how the Stanley Cup originated.

Back in 1892, the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, decided that a cup should be held each year by the reigning hockey team.  So he bought a cup - a silver cup about 7 and a half inches high and 11 and a half inches wide for around $50.00.

Then he named two men from Ottawa to be the “trustees” of the cup.  These men were to administer the yearly competition according to the standards Lord Stanley set up, and were to receive the cup back from the previous years winners in order to give it to the new winning team.

Each year, according to Lord Stanley’s policies, the winning team was supposed to have their team name and year engraved on a silver ring on the cup.  This way the cup would stay in circulation throughout the league, and still bear the significance of each team who won annually.

The ironic part is that Lord Stanley never even saw a hockey playoff game, or get the chance to give the cup to a winning team.  He decided to go home to England… and fortunately for us the tradition flourished through the years.
