Olympics – Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Travel Tips

  Let’s fast forward a few months…

You made it!  After endless weeks of planning, plotting, scheming and saving, you’ve not only managed to make it to Vancouver 2010 safely but you’ve even managed to settled into your gorgeous furnish vacation rental and put your jetlag to rest with a good night’s sleep.  And now, full of espresso, enthusiasm and expectation you’re ready to commute to your first ever Olympic venue to cheer your country on towards gold!

Ten minutes later you’re standing in the rain surrounded by a dizzying whirlwind of buses, sea buses, skytrains, taxis and pontoon planes, not to mention a couple of million annoyingly chipper Vancouverites…  oh, and you forgot your umbrella.

Getting around the 2010 Winter Olympics doesn’t have to be this difficult.  In fact, the city of Vancouver has gone to great lengths to ease the to-and-fro aspects of your Olympic experience.  But before you embark there are several important facts that must be taken to heart before arriving on Canada’s West Coast:

-Your umbrella is your best friend.  Whether you’re lining up for the speed skating events on the Fraser River Delta or bashing your cowbell with abandon at Whistler’s downhill venue, it’s either going to be raining, snowing or sunny. (and sometimes all in one day)  So with the odds stacked depressingly against you, chances are that something’s going to be falling out of the sky.  Don’t flip the bird at the weather gods.  Be prepared.

-Leave the car at the rental lot.  One thing you won’t find at Vancouver’s Olympic Venues is spectator parking.  Why?  Imagine the parking lot at the JC Penny Boxing Day Sale.  Now multiply that by a billion.  Get the picture?  Save your money for a few après-event drinks.  Hey, it’s not like you’re driving!

The key to Olympic happiness is really that simple.  An umbrella and public transportation.  Remember, this is a city that including its municipalities covers 96 kilometres that play home to 2.1 million people.  Venues pepper the map from the Richmond lowlands to the City Centre to Cypress Mountain.  Even the Whistler venues are just 3 hours north.  In a city this big, there are numerous methods of getting around if you just know where to look.  And with Vancouver’s drive toward environmental sustainability these methods are not only easy and convenient – they’re also affordable.

Metropolitan Vancouver is serviced by Translink, the company that controls the SeaBuses that navigate the Burrard Inlet, the city buses, the West Coast Express commuter train and the automated rapid transit system commonly known as the SkyTrain.  Originally built to connect Vancouver’s eastern suburbs with the Downtown Core, the newly expanded SkyTrain features the Canada Line, a 16-stop, 25-minute connector between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and the City Centre.  Of course, if you’re coming via Vancouver Island or any of the smaller Gulf Islands for that matter, the BC Ferry fleet boast the new, impressive Super Ferries that make this short sail as pleasurable as it is memorable.

Voting by IOC members:

In the voting process, members of IOC, whose country had applied for the bid, are not eligible to vote. A candidate city which secures 50 + vote will be elected as a host. If no candidate city secures 50 + votes, the candidate city which has secured the least number of votes will be eliminated. Then again there will be a second round of voting. In the second round of voting, if no candidate secures 50 + votes, the candidate who secures the least number of votes will be eliminated; in the third and final round of election, the candidate city which secures 50+ votes or highest number of votes will be declared a winner.

However, before the voting process and the final decision is taken, each city will make a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute session for questioning. Accordingly, US made its presentation at 0845 hours, Japan at 1030 hours, Brazil at 1200 hours followed by Spain at 1450 hours. When the presentation and questioning session was over, it was followed by the election by secret voting by IOC members.

In the election held, in the first round Madrid scored 28 votes, Rio scored 26, Tokyo 22 and US 18;having secured the least number of votes, US had to make its exit after the first round.

Additionally, with memorable catchphrases like “Knowing before you go” and preparing for “business as unusual”, the Travelsmart initiative is hoping to be instrumental in promoting local awareness to achieve a 30% reduction in vehicle traffic through the period of the Games by encouraging Vancouverites to walk, cycle or join their guests on the new and improved public transit systems.

But what of Whistler?  One might presume that transportation-wise, Vancouver 2010′s slightly more remote alpine venue could get the short end of the… hockey stick.   Guess again.  The newly expanded Sea to Sky Highway that connects this world-famous resort town with big brother Vancouver is a safe and beautiful journey – not the nail-biting ride of days gone by.  And once you’re there, things are equally as impressive.  Expanded 24-hour bus routes connect Whistler to the neighbouring communities of Squamish and Pemberton.  Getting around couldn’t be easier with the Whistler and Valley Express (WAVE) transit system which includes buses with low floors, ramps and wheelchair/scooter access.  The BC Transit fleet that services the Pemberton-Whistler-Squamish area will expand from 39 buses to 135 and have five times the existing service hours running 24-7 once the Games come to town.

Over the next years, Nuzman, as Brazil’s top volleyball leader, backep up a host of national teams, clubs, coaches, and players. Contrary to most Olympic leaders, he did not accept that a Brazilian volleyball player can play in Europe and Asia. But Nuzman’s reward for his perseverance came in 1987. Without a doubt, he made the world headlines when the Brazilian women’s volleyball team won the 1987 FIVB Junior World Cup in Seoul, whose victory put an end to Korea’s attempt to become the first squad to win three world championships. All his life, he dreamed about winning it. For more than ten years, Nuzman, a former volleyball player, worked daily for several hours at a stretch. From then onwards, there were a host of international awards, including an Olympic gold medal (1992). During his leadership, Brazil also hosted dozens of international championships.

Brazil is home to a number of well-known individuals: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (the so-called “Pele”/ soccer), Oscar Niemeyer (architect), Gisele Bundchen (a top supermodel), and Carlos Jobim (composer of “The Girl of Ipanema”), but Carlos Nuzman is perhaps the most popular Brazilian in this century because he has put the sports on top of the national agenda in Brazil, an Olympic-obsessed Latin American nation

The Truth About Tryouts Soccer Strategies

Tryouts soccer

It never fails to practice the theory that depending upon the purpose your team has, choose players to take part in tryouts soccer. Suppose you are coach working with kids, help them to improve their competitiveness. Help the players to shine in the game if you notice athleticism and love for the game in them.

You might find few players who’s new to team but has got the skill to learn fast naturally. If that’s the case, take time to prepare the player for the tryouts.

Following are some tips that come handy for coaches trying to prepare players for the forthcoming tryouts and soccer tournament.

Prior to Tryouts: You should make the players run 3 days a week to bring them to be in shape. This surely helps to build the stamina. If they can easily run 2-3 miles by the end, they’ll be in good shape.

Soccer Training

Agility and steadiness are also very important. Apart from these, good running, stopping and changing the direction are essential too. Doing short sprints will help the players to accomplish this. For instance, sprints can be from 40-100 yards marked on a flat surface. Let the players run between it few times.

Shooting can be practiced by hitting the round target drawn with the chalk on the wall. The perfect place to draw the target would be two feet from the ground and a foot diagonally. Ask the players to hit the target from a 10 feet distance.

When the players are comfortable doing it, increase the distance and let them try.

Going early to the place with your players will give you plenty of time for the warm-up practice.

When the kids are not required to wear something specific, request them to wear something distinctive. You know it is easier to point to someone wearing blue socks and give an opinion than pointing to a group of girls wearing red T-shirts and white shorts.

Many tryouts soccer sessions start with small games like 2v2, 4v4 to goals, and work up 8v8 to goals with goalkeepers.
Many decisions are made in the small-sided phase. Players are rated as a) definitely b) may be c) certainly not in many cases. The ‘may be’ players get the most playing time in the 8v8 stage, so as to arrive at a decision. So encourage kids to play with energy and take control of the game.

Communicate in the games: Good communication makes your players to observe coaches in a positive way. By giving instructions and helping other players with vocal and visual signals, any player can become a leader. Some players appear to be out of the game mentally by being silent.

Free Soccer Training Drills: 5 Big Reasons To Boost Throw-ins

Free soccer training drills

If you are like me, you probably understand the importance of incorporating free soccer training drills that teach every player in your team to throw the ball in. During the youth soccer drills, around 70 percent of throw-ins are foul throws which makes the ball go in other team’s control.

To overcome this issue it is essential that all the players in your team learn how to perform throw-ins correctly and get the possession of the ball right away. Thus the player may easily go behind the defense and make a hit for the ball.

All that is required to teach the players to get the ball back into play quickly is some simple actions and moves, performed correctly at the U-10 level and below.

Some soccer coaches tend to count only on some selected players in free soccer training drills. These kind of players are named as designated throwers. The designated thrower is, for obvious reasons, the most worn out player on the field. He is required to sprint up and down the sideline and even across the field, to take a simple throw in.

Soccer Drills

Once more I would repeat the rule that each and every player in the game should be given a chance to throw the ball in. A lot of times when the ball goes outside the boundary, a speedy move forward can bring it back in control, but mostly the coaches condemns this kind of step Now when this player objects, he learns that he/she not being a mid-fielder is not permitted to take the throws and the midfielders take throws only.

While coaching drills make sure that each of your players touches the ball each time possible. This quick move, apart from giving a chance to score, also has long term impressions which are far beyond the win-lose theory. The game finishes in about an hour with young players. Therefore it’s not a got idea to waste much of the time in bringing back into the play.

By giving importance to quick throws the soccer coaches build strategic awareness in the players as opposed to those who do not. During football dills the defendant team has about 20 to 30 seconds to get back behind the ball as the usual defending against the unexpected restarts cannot be applied for teams who defend against designated throwers.

Proper time should be given to players if the coaches sincerely want their young players to perform at a higher level. It is essential that all the beginners learn the technique of throwing-in the ball properly; and after that it could be reverted back to the ground for the kids to carry on the game.

Skills, game knowledge and stamina vary according to age; be careful during free soccer training drills, not to overburden the players with difficult to achieve tasks. Subscribing to our youth coaching program, you will receive helpful resources and articles, periodic newsletters and videos in order to train youth players.

Free Soccer Training Drills: Want To Learn Shooting And Striking

Free soccer training drills

Here’s a really simple way to maximize the skills and success of your young strikers through free soccer training drills that teach them to become far-sighted on the pitch. That they must remain alert to get any chance to take on the defenders one-on-one.

This article stresses upon the techniques that are important for the strikers to learn during the soccer drills.

Learning to strike independently is also very important even though having a striking partner is always great. They have to consider themselves as intruders.

A great suggestion for your strikers is to spread out since the opponent’s defenders prefer congestion. They prefer not to have a one-on-one situation. Strikers should learn to be cruel, when it comes to shoot the ball without any hesitancy.

Soccer Drills

A striker essentially needs to take on and beat the defender before the defender finds time to react. Even when practicing the football drills, your strikers must have your full confidence and support as their coach.
Strikers should get a quick signal to go, wherever he or she wishes.

Goal scoring is a project to be carried out independently. Reason being the absence of backing, unlike other players, in the other areas of midfield and defense. That is why, it is important to impart the capability and soccer skill to play independently.

Another item in the list of free soccer training drills, is to learn to pass the ball in penalty area. Precise passing and receiving techniques to have a point to goal are the considerations of this drill.

If the penalty area is jammed with the defenders, players should shoot unfocused. Another approach to avert the defender’s attention is to move the ball away and change the striking point.

To make sure that the players feel stress-free, when they are near the penalty area and calm near the goal, these type of coaching drills, should be repeated multiple times.

Controlling and passing the ball perfectly, while keeping oneself calm near the goal are the key points during these drills. Players should only consider one thing—finishing into the goal.

Player 1, should remain at the edge of penalty area and pass the ball across the goal, to the player 2 on the other side. Having perfect control over the ball, player 2 swiftly passes the ball alongside the ground to the player 3, waiting near the goal. Only two touches of player 3 are required—first to get the ball, second to shoot to the goal.

Now jump up and integrate all of these free soccer training drills into your program. You can also access loads of relevant information on performing drills, in form of newsletters, articles, and videos by subscribing to our youth soccer coaching community.
