The Performance of Your Life
Knowing how to behave when you’re singing for an audience is important if you’re to sing at your best, so here are some practical tips to help you with your next live singing performance.
The Practice Run
Rehearse with the band. Before you go on stage, have a minimum of one dress rehearsal. When you do your final dress rehearsal, sing from memory.
Outfit
Make sure you choose a good outfit, because this can determine the outcome of your show. When you practice, be sure to wear the outfit that you plan to wear for your singing performance. It is important to ensure that you are able to move comfortably in your outfit.
Walking out onto the stage
Figure out where to stand on the stage, and then practice walking to that spot. Knowing how to walk across a stage and land in place isn’t as easy as it sounds. You want to stop in place but also find your posture as you stop. Find your alignment, walk across the room and maintain that posture.
Keep the speaker turned away from you
Singing with a band can be confusing, at least the first time. You’re going to have some trouble hearing yourself if the speakers are turned away. Ask if it’s possible to have a speaker turned toward you. The problem is that bands play loudly, and a speaker can be distracting if you’re not used to it. If there is an instrument that plays the melody line, make sure you learn to pick it out.
Smile
When you go on stage, smile at the audience. You appear far more confident if you look straight at your audience as you walk across the stage. Your smile needs to look genuine even if you’re nervous and don’t want to be on the stage.
Acknowledgment of the audience
It can be difficult to know when to acknowledge the audience. Singers can’t always sing intimate songs in an intimate locale, but you can imagine yourself in a cozy locale if this helps you with your performance. Take cues from professionals to get a better idea of how you should perform.
Don’t let distractions put you off
A concert can yield many different distractions for a performer. People can do many things in an audience, such as coughing or even leaving early. Most people are ignorant as to how this can distract a performer, and because you are the performer you are expected to be professional about it. That being said, it would be wise to stage a few distractions as you practice at home. If you have any friends, you can have them try distracting you, and over time you will learn to ignore it.
Keep an eye on your hands
If you’re not sure what to do with your hands during your live singing performance, putting your hands down at your sides is safest. The safest place is at your sides, even if that’s not the most interesting place. If you choose to gesture, make it a complete gesture and make sure your elbows move out away from your body. If you want, you can fold your hands in front of you.
