Soccer Coaching Drills – How To Use Trapping Effectively
Let’s say that at least 50% of soccer coaching drills must concentrate on improving player’s trapping skills. You would probably dismiss it as a fancy. But you know what! According to a study, in addition to dribbling and passing, trapping too plays a vital role in helping teams win matches.
The ability to capture the ball and retain it for a considerable time is called trapping. These are soccer exercises that permit the use of chest, thighs and feet while doing so.
It’s vital for your players to master the skill of trapping the ball. If not, they will never really be in control of the game because everything else comes after trapping the ball. Some of the following techniques help in enhancing the trapping skills of the players.
Use your feet: As a coach, you must teach the basic lesson of using the feet to maneuver the ball. In kids soccer drills, the kids must be particularly trained on using the inside of their foot. The fact that the inside area of the foot is large makes it easy for the players to hold the ball.
During soccer coaching drills, the high ranking and senior players should be educated on the use of foot, its crown, and instep of the foot plus the whole foot. Train your players to adopt the strategy to apply ankle or shin to catch hold of the ball when it is jumping a lot.
Thigh Movement: Speedy and bouncy ball can be controlled by simply using the thigh. Guide the players to come in front of the ball, take one thigh up to capture the ball and other thigh to stay grounded. While doing this, remember that the knee should some down when it comes in contact with the ball so that the ball remains within the player’s range.
This exercise of dropping the knee needs to be done repetitively so that the players master the art of first stopping the ball using the knee and then drop it so that the ball trickles down the feet.
Use the Chest: Trapping a ball flying high in the air with the use of your chest is also equally useful, like the use of thighs. Train the players to confront the ball head on by taking their chest out in full force in order to control the ball. As a result the ball will loose its tempo almost immediately and will fall down at once.
However, in the soccer training drills, it is important to realize that young players should not be exposed a lot to this technique. It is very typical of them to use their hands while trying to stop the ball with the chest. This can prove to be dangerous as the kids might develop a habit of using their hands while tackling the ball.
