This gem of a reel from Shimano has to be the top in its class. This reel has been very well received by both salt water and fresh water fishing enthusiasts. As we have come to expect from Shimano, this baby is packed with cutting edge technology. If casting is your thing, you are going to love the Shimano Calcutta TE 400. When it comes to features, this reel has what it takes to do the job well.

These include levelwind, high line capacity, light weight, and fine drag adjustments. The drag is made from a material called Dartanium which offers very smooth and effective performance. Don’t be deceived by the relatively light weight of the reel as it is no lightweight when it comes to performance.

When you are out on the water with the reel in hand the Shimano Calcutta 400 really begins to shine. The first thing you notice is the ease of casting. It strips the line off the reel with ease as the bait soars through the air. Matched with the right rod, casts of 35 – 40 yards are easily attained. The rod I was using was a Shimano Crucial 7.6 ft which worked well.

Hooking up to a good fish you immediately experience the power this reel has. Any fish taking the bait is soon outmatched by performance of the Shimano FE400. The big knobs on the winder give plenty of grip and when the fish makes a run the drag keeps control providing an even pressure without jerking. The power you have on tap means you can catch fighting fish weighing up to 50 lbs.

One of the nice things I enjoy about high-end Shimano gear is the way its made to last and to provide high perforance for many years to come. The investment in technology pays dividends in things like the anti-rusting ball bearings used in Shimano Calcutta reels.

The audible clicker is another nice feature. and very handy if you want to leave your rig while you attend to something else. This is nicely placed for easy access but its not in your way.

Overall the Calcutta TE is a superb piece of equipment that is unlikely to fail in action.
