Beautiful Arundel Castle
Arundel castle was founded by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067 and he became the very first person to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. The castle was very badly damaged during the time of the English Civil War but they managed to restore it to its former glory in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a big reason why people get holiday cottage Sussex in this area.
The castle was first built in 1086 and was built as major fortification for the mouth of the River Arun. Once old Roger passed away the property was handed to the crown and passed to Henry I.
The medieval time period was next and you will find that during this time it was simply handed down to various people without much happening. The crown once again seized the property after Thomas Howard was executed for conspiring to marry Mary Queen of Scots, it was later returned to the heir of the Earl and all was restored.
The Howard family kept the castle but did nothing with it for many years until Charles Howard got the property, it then changed. 1787 was the year in which he started doing work to the castle and this carried on for many years indeed, he had a big party to celebrate the finished product and then died shortly afterwards.
The Monarch Queen Victoria herself has actually stayed in the castle and apparently really enjoyed the experience, more work was done before and after her stay and this is how you see the castle today, many of her things are still there.
The great thing about the castle is that most of it is open to the public so make sure that if you can you can take a break from that web design job in that serviced offices Soho office and get out there to pay it a visit!
