Tips For Snowboarding Newbies

Anyone can learn to snowboard within a couple of days, yet there are enough challenges, techniques, and styles to keep you interested for years.

There are three snowboarding styles to choose from – freeride, freestyle and alpine. In freeride, you ride down the face of a mountain, whilst taking in its natural bumps and curves. Freestyle snowboarding centers on tricks, with spins and jumps being good examples. Snowboarding alpine style is not unlike skiing, as it emphasizes fast speed and hard turns. If you are not sure which style is best for them, it is advisable to start with freeride, as it is the easiest to pick up the basics of the sport with.

There are two different stances snowboarding stances that can be adopted. The most popular is the regular stance, in which the left foot goes in front of the right. This contrasts to the goofy stance, whereby your right foot goes in front of your left foot. Both will be shown to you by your instructor early on whilst showing you how to snowboard and it is totally up to you as to which one you make your primary stance.

Unlike skiers, who shift their weight from side to side, snowboarders must shift their weight between their heel and their toe. The technique is more like surfing or skateboarding than skiing. By shifting your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. When you shift your weight backward, the board slows down. By digging your heels down, the edge of the snowboard drags in the snow and causes you to stop.

There is a different type of snowboard for each of the styles: alpine, freestyle and freeride boards. Each of them is constructed differently in terms of size, shape and materials. The best board for you is dependent on your favored style of snowboarding, your height (when standing on end, the board should reach between your nose and chin), your shoe size (your heels and toes should not end up in the snow when you turn) and your weight (heavier riders need a board with a stiffer flex).

You will need snowboard boots and bindings as these are necessary to attach yourself safely, securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The higher the quality of the ones you get, the easier it will be to control your board.

You should borrow or rent equipment whilst you learn to snowboard so that you can be sure that not only do you like the sport, but that you also get items that are suited to the particular style of snowboarding that you will mostly be participating in. Equipment and clothing can be expensive, so it can be costly to make the wrong choices.
